Mozart-by-the-Sea
A Restored 1912 Craftsman in Cardiff-by-the-Sea
Named for its location on Mozart Avenue and inspired by Cardiff-by-the-Sea's historic Composer District, Mozart-by-the-Sea is a thoughtfully restored 1912 Craftsman overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
When I purchased the home, I saw an opportunity to preserve an important piece of local architectural history while creating a space that reflected how people live today. My approach was never to erase the past, but to understand what was worth preserving, what could be restored, and where thoughtful updates could improve the home for the next century.
The renovation focused on honoring the character of the original structure while carefully reimagining the interiors. Historic features were repaired and preserved wherever possible, including original wood windows, architectural details, and period elements that contribute to the home's identity. In other areas, outdated or deteriorated components were thoughtfully rebuilt, balancing preservation with functionality.
Design Philosophy
I have always believed that the most memorable homes are not decorated—they are collected.
Throughout Mozart-by-the-Sea, antiques, contemporary furnishings, artisan-made pieces, collected artwork, and American vintage finds are layered together to create a home that feels personal rather than prescribed. Objects gathered through travel sit comfortably alongside family heirlooms and custom pieces. Nothing was selected simply to match. Each piece was chosen because it contributes to the story of the home and the people who live within it.
The project reflects my broader design philosophy: that beauty comes not from perfection, but from authenticity. The spaces I am most drawn to are those that reveal something about their owners—homes shaped by experience, craftsmanship, history, and a strong sense of place.
Today, Mozart-by-the-Sea serves as both a private residence and a living expression of that philosophy. It stands as an example of how historic homes can be thoughtfully preserved while remaining relevant, functional, and deeply personal.
Historic Significance
Originally built in 1912, the home's first owner was Victor Kremer, a music publisher who played an important role in shaping the identity of the surrounding neighborhood. Kremer is credited with naming many of the streets after renowned composers, creating what became known as Cardiff's Composer District. He also helped popularize the name Cardiff-by-the-Sea, adding the now-iconic "by-the-Sea" to distinguish the growing coastal community.
More than a century later, preserving that connection to place became an important part of the home's restoration and ongoing historic designation efforts.
Originally built in 1912, the home is currently undergoing the process of historic designation, helping preserve its architectural character for future generations.
